Joshua Petersohn is USA Masters Team Head Coach for the 2022 Maccabiah Games. Josh played for USA’s Gold-Medal-Winning Maccabi Masters Ice Hockey team in 2013, and brings his long history of playing, coaching, and hockey passion to the 2022 games. His mission in taking on this role is to pass on the competitive spirit and community of the games, to celebrate Jewish culture and our homeland, and to once again bring Gold to the USA Masters Team. Josh’s lifelong passion for hockey traces its roots to the nascent Philadelphia Flyers and in the early 70s. Like so many Philly kids of that day, Josh idolized these hockey pioneers for their exciting play and unwavering commitment to team achievement. By the age of 5, Josh—with his still-present energy and persistence—had eroded any last resistance his parents could muster. He found himself fully immersed in youth hockey, embodying the lessons learned from watching his early hockey heroes and many to follow. Josh continued through Juniors and ultimately to Lehigh University where he played varsity following his brother, Billy and constant companion.
Decades after that 5-year-old hit the ice like a human pinball, Josh continues to carry hockey near to his heart. Over the years it has brought immeasurable enjoyment, travel (some glorious; some less so), and countless life lessons and friendships. Josh has passed on his love of hockey through 25 years of coaching, with a constant focus on the most important aspects of the game: passion, teamwork, and perseverance. Never at a loss for a creative idea to impart lessons on each of these, many of Josh’s former players have characterized him as the most fun and impactful coach of their lives.
Josh’s two children, Berk and Sloan, had the good fortune of being coached by their dad. They are avid players who continue to play- occasionally with their dad- to this day. In fact, Sloan will be competing at the 2022 Maccabi games too. Aside from hockey, Josh owns and manages Moreland Development, a real estate development company in Philadelphia area.
